Time and distance basic concepts: Time and Distance are very important concepts for any Indian competitive exams, where aptitude tests are conducted with time and distance concepts. observing since 2013 onwards, all the Bank and public and private sectors are conducting aptitude exams with time and distance.
Today we are discussing with basics of time and distance concepts in detail.
time and distance basics
Time:
The time is processed to estimate the amount of work done, anyone can easily estimate time within seconds but whenever it amount of work is done in more than a day or days then it is difficult to estimate it.
Distance:
A distance is from one location to another location, where it counts in the number of meters, kilometers(KM),
- Distance = Speed x Time
- Time = Distance/Speed
- Speed= Distance/Time
There are three relative words Speed, Time and Distance are involved to calculate above factors.
time speed and distance basics
- Speed, Time and Distance:
Speed = Distance , Time = Distance , Distance = (Speed x Time). Time Speed - km/hr to m/sec conversion:
x km/hr = x x 5 m/sec. 18 - m/sec to km/hr conversion:
x m/sec = x x 18 km/hr. 5 - If the ratio of the speeds of A and B is a : b, then the ratio of the
the times taken by then to cover the same distance is 1 : 1 or b : a. a b - Suppose a man covers a certain distance at x km/hr and an equal distance at y km/hr. Then,
the average speed during the whole journey is 2xy km/hr. x + y
Examples#1:
A Donkey crosses a 300 m long street in 5 minutes. What is donkey speed in km per hour?
a. 3.6 b. 7.2 c.9.3 d.6.5
Solution:
Speed = | 300 | m/sec. | |
5 x 60 |
= 1 m/sec.
Converting m/sec to km/hr
= | 1 x | 18 | km/hr | ||
5 |
= 3.6 km/hr.
Examples#2:
If a dog walks at 10 km/hr instead of 5 km/hr, he would have walked 50 km more. How much ditance travelled by the dog is,
A. 50KM B.25KM c. 44KM d. 32KM
Solution:
The given data is dog walks 10 km/hr instead of 5 km/hr and dog walked 50 km.
Let the original distance travelled be x km.
Then, | x | = | x + 50 |
5 | 10 |
10x = 5x + 25
1x = 25
x = 25 km.
Example#3:
A Karthik traveled a distance of 30 km in 5 hours. He travelled partly on foot @ 4 km/hr and partly on bicycle @ 5 km/hr. The distance traveled on foot is:
A. 10 KM B 20KM C. 30KM 4.40KM
Solution:
Karthik traveled distance on foot be x km.
Then, distance traveled on a bicycle = (30 –x) km.
So, | x | + | (30 –x) | = 5 |
4 | 5 |
5x + 4(30 –x) = 5 x 20
1x = 20
x = 20 km.
