Telangana Election Results 2023
There are two reasons why Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) was surprised by the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections. KCR maintained that TRS would lead the third front in a hung parliament, even though the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) secured the majority of seats by winning 9 out of 17 constituencies. Second, in the 2014 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party won four constituencies against one seat with a significant 19.5% vote share.
In the verdict on May 23, TRS received 41.3% of the vote, followed by Congress, which won in three constituencies with 29.5%, AIMIM, which received 2.8%, and its leader, Asaduddin Owaisi, who won from the Hyderabad constituency. However, these figures contrast with the Assembly polls held in December 2018. Just four months before the Lok Sabha elections, TRS had a 47% vote share, the Congress alliance had a 32% vote share, and the BJP had a 7% vote share.

For example, BJP held the Secunderabad seat, where it has been fortified throughout the previous twenty years. The saffron party cadre and its affiliated groups are known for fostering communal tensions between Hindus and minorities in the region, which has a significant Christian population. With a margin of over 60,000 votes, BJP candidate G Kisan Reddy defeated TRS candidate T Sai Kiran Yadav in this election.
During the election season, 180 farmers, primarily turmeric growers, ran for the Nizamabad constituency seat. These ranchers prevailed regarding snatching almost 10% of the vote share, around 1 lakh votes. KCR had previously asserted that the BJP had funded those farmers as part of their electoral strategy.
